Myth as a semiological system in August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and The Piano Lesson Abstract Myths are one of the most important elements included in the history of not only African-American lives but also the lives of each and every one of us. Myths are inevitable human resources at times when no other idea justifies our being. As Barthes posits, for it is human history which converts reality into speech, and it alone rules the life and the death of mythical language. Ancient or not, mythology can only have an historical foundation, for myth is a type of speech chosen by history: it cannot possibly evolve from the nature of things. This study looks into the significance of Myths and their determining roles as semiological systems in August Wilson s dramatic twentieth century cycle plays; Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and The Piano Lesson. In these plays, myths take the forms of individuals, rituals and even ancestral objects. It can be observed that each one of these elements performs the most important role in conveying the significance of the Afric an-American psyche and delicately portrays the eminent influence of ancestral backgrounds in shaping the lives of each character. The works of scholars such as Roland Barthes, Henry Gates, as well as many more, have been employed to better grasp this matter. Use Among Adolescents with Female Same-Sex Parents free essay sample

Research Critique Family types have made considerable changes in the last few decades. There is an increase in the number of families being headed by same sex couples. With such changes come the questions about the effects on human development in persons raised in same sex parent homes. After looking at the title and before reading any of the article, I had the assumption that I was going to learn that there are more problems in adolescents in a same sex parent family over those in a different sex parent family.I find that to be my religious bias coming out. I have made the poor assumption that just because same sex relationships don’t follow my own belief system that they are in turn faulty relationships and not good environments for children to be reared in. I recognized this bias once I completed reading the article. I have no foundation for these biases by way of scientific data and realize that just because my own religious beliefs don’t align with this idea, doesn’t mean that these relationships and family types don’t work overall.I found this article interesting because it opened my eyes to my own biases about same sex relationships as a whole. As far as data presented and results, I didn’t find it as interesting based on the fact that there are no significant differences between the two family types studied. I was hoping to see more information on comparisons and results but since the subjects used were from another study, it didn’t seem to have as much data as I had expected.The study, Delinquency, Victimization, and Substance Use Among Adolescents With Female Same-Sex Parents by Jennifer L. Wainright and Charlotte J. Patterson, examines whether adolescents with female same sex parents differ significantly from a matched group of adolescents living with different-sex parents, including measures of delinquent behavior, victimization, substance abuse, and qualities of family relationships. Participants were selected from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health in grades 7-12.Forty-four participants whose families were headed by a mother who reported being in a marriage or marriage like relationsh ip with another women were selected. These participants were matched based on gender, age, ethnic background, adoption status, learning disability status, family income and parents’ education with an adolescent reared in a different-sex parent home. There were a total of 88 participants in the study (Wainright Patterson, 2006).The study assessed substance abuse, delinquent behaviors, and victimization of each adolescent participant via an in home interview (IHI), in school surveys of students, and through in home questionnaires of parents (Wainright Patterson, 2006). Family and relationship variables were also examined. Wainright Patterson (2006) stated that they also looked at â€Å"adolescents’ perceived care from adults, teachers, and friends was measured with three items from the Adolescent IHI regarding how much the adolescent believed that others care about them† (p. 27). Wainright Patterson’s (2006) study revealed the following: Across a diverse array of assessments, including me asures of delinquent behavior, victimization, substance abuse, and qualities of family relationships, adolescents with female same- sex parents did not differ significantly from a matched group of adolescents living with different-sex parents. Regardless of family type, adolescents were less likely to report risky behavior when parents described close relationships with them (p. 528-529).Thus we can see that the sexual orientation of parents does not have a significant effect on the adolescents adjustments as much as the closeness of the relationship between the parent and the adolescent. In my opinion the research suggested in this article was based on a limited number of participants and was solely based on self-reports of the adolescents and parents. This necessarily makes the study incomplete but it does lead me to wonder how the results would change with a larger sample size. This would be a good follow up to this study.

(Stevens 1994) Carl Jung emphasized that the unconscious determines a person’s personality. He claimed that the unconscious had two layers. The first was the personal unconscious. This is where a person’s individual memories are stored. The Jung term for the personal unconscious is â€Å"a portion of the unconscious corresponding roughly to the Freudian id.† (Zimbardo Pg.391) This is where the important details are stored when they are repressed or forgotten about. The second layer is the collective unconscious. This is an inaccessible layer that contains all learned experiences. Reinhard Heydrich Essay When we remember or hear of the holocaust, the common names that follow , Anne Frank, Oscar Shinler, Hitler and so on, but has anyone hare Hitlereard of Reinhard Heitritch? Reinhard Heitritch is a man who played a very large role in the developement of the holocaust, he was the achitect who implemented the solution to the Jewish Question. He started out by joining the SS in 1931, and formed an organization for gathering information, the SD (Sicherheitsdienst), or SS Security Service. This organization was created to organize and gather information on those who were any threat to Hitler and all members of the Nazi Party as well. It started out small, with a single typewriter but it was not long before many others joined and expanded onto the organization. Because of the SD or SS security Service and its success, ReinHard Heydrich was sent the direction of his own personal success, power, and role in the hollocaust. From joining the SS as an ordinary SS member, to being promoted as SS Major by Dec. 1931 (the same year he joined), SS Colonel in 1932, and SS Brigadier General in 1933. In this highest position, Heydrich was now arresting, instead of gathering information on those who were any threat to Hitler. The number of people Reinhard Heydrich arrested was massive and lead to many being put into Dachau for there was no room left in the prisons. In between the arrests, Heydrich began using greater punishment to anyone against Nazism. Such as murdering and torturing suspect who he selected without careful judgement. As his power increased, along with the power of the Nazis, so did the darkness inside of him as a Nazi. Reinhard Heydrich had slowly become more and more involved in the developement of the first steps of the hollocaust, and also the seconf world war. As the Nazis took over Austria in March 1938, Heydrich opened an office there for Jewish Emigration. Its purpose was to give permits to Jews who wanted to leave Austria, and an estimate of 100, 000 emigrated. Reinhard Heydrich had also been part of Kristallnacht, what some say was the very start of the hollocaust. After the attack of the jews, 25, 000 Jewish men were ordered by Heydrich to be sent to concentration camps In 1941, Reinhard Heydrich had made the calls that killed a massive number of people. The half a million jews who died from starvation and murder in Ghettos such as Warsaw and Krakow were ordered by Heydrich to be sent there. By 1939, he was given complete control over the Reich Main Security Office (RSHA). This final group hed gained power over, involving the SD, Criminal Police and Gestapo was the group responsible for the unthinkable amount of deaths in Europe. While leader of this organization, hed now been attending important Nazi conferences. While at a conference on January, 20, 1942, Reinhard Heydrich declared the final solution to the Jewish question The usage of Zyklon-B had then been decided for the extermination of Jews at death camps after being deported to the east. The first camp that this methode began at was Auschwitz, where three million had been killed, most from gas chambers. That was Reinhard Heydrichs rise to power, his role and impact on the developement on the holocaust. Froming joining the SS to announcing the final solution at a Conference, its absolutely scary how simple it was for a man to reach the positions he did, and leave such an inconceivable mark in the history of the world. What is also just as terrifying and inconceivable is that Reinhard Heydrich also had a family that he loved very much and he played a very peaceful instrument. When learning that Heydrich had a gentle, innocent and loving side to him outside of his work, its very difficult to think he had it, while knowing what this man did. This is why i created this model, to demonstrate the two opposite sides to him, and my wonder (Like Mr. Jarvis talked about before) how he could switch his mind and heart when coming home to a normal life with his family, after designing a plan to kill an unthinkable amount of people. People who could have been almost identical to the people he loved at home. At the back, this is a picture of the car hed been assassinated in. The constant power hed been gaining along the way to the position where he declared the final solution, made him over confident, arrogant and stubborn. He one day decided to leave his house in his car without any security, and was assassinated by Czech underground agents who threw a bomb at his car. The bomb injured him badly and he died days later in the hospital from blood poisoning, he died on June 4 1942.

It deals with both the lending and borrowing rates of interest for commercial banks. The Monetary Policy aims to maintain price stability, full employment and economic growth. The Reserve Bank of India is responsible for formulating and implementing Monetary Policy. It can increase or decrease the supply of currency as well as interest rate, carry out open market operations, control credit and vary the reserve requirements. Objectives: The objective of price stability has, however, gained further importance following the opening-up of the economy and the deregulation of financial markets in India in recent times. There are four main 'channels' which the RBI looks at:  · Quantum channel: money supply and credit (affects real output and price level through changes in reserves money, money supply and credit aggregates).  · Interest rate channel.  · Exchange rate channel (linked to the currency).  · Asset price. Monetary Policy: Pre-Reform (Prior 1992) In the pre-reform era, the financial market in India was highly segmented and regulated. The money market lacked depth, with only the overnight interbank market in place. The interest rates in the government securities market and the credit market were tightly regulated. The dispensation of credit to the Government took place via a statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) process whereby the commercial banks were made to set aside substantial portions of their liabilities for investment in government securities at below market interest rates. Furthermore, credit to the commercial sector was regulated, with prescriptions of multiple lending rates and a prevalence of directed credit at highly subsidised interest rates. Monetary policy had to address itself to the task of neutralising the inflationary impact of the growing deficit. The Reserve Bank had to resort to direct instruments of monetary control, in particular the cash reserve ratio.

Children using social media Essay

Many children have access to the Internet whether it is by computer, smartphone, tablet or other different types of electronics. Parents allow their children access to the Internet, but a majority of parents don’t have control over their child’s usage. There are websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler and Instagram, in which many children under the age of 15 and under have profiles. Social media allows people to interact with other users, whether it is people they know in person or even with strangers. It allows people to share their lives with the online world and it all happens with the use of social media. However, there have been many reports of cyber bullying, privacy concerns and many other different crimes being committed on the Internet. Therefore, in today’s world the Internet is not a 100% safe and secure environment. On the Internet, there are thousands of pictures of alcohol, tobacco and sexual behaviors and every user has access to the inappropriate pictures. With social media, teenagers have access to see adults give their thoughts about drugs, sex and alcohol and the opinion of those people may influence the minds of children. At a young age, children are affected and influenced by adults and even manipulated by adults on the Internet which makes it hazardous for them to have social media accounts. There are Internet users who spend all their time on the Internet, only to chat with anonymous strangers and there is a possibility of meeting sexual predators in the Internet. Therefore, children that are fifteen years of age and under must not have social media accounts because social media has negative effects on their grades, impacts human behavior and also leads to privacy issues. Firstly, the use of social media negatively impacts the grades of teenagers. For this purpose, social media takes a lot of time out of time out of people’s lives. Internet users are browsing on the internet, logging on to Facebook and playing computer games for numerous hours. It is not only adults who have addiction problems, but many teenagers have the same problem. Teenagers that use social media more than necessary have negative effects on their grades. Homework and studying has a huge impact in school grades. When teenagers spend numerous hours on the internet, they spend less time on activities that are important, such as spending time with family, daily chores or homework. On a survey questioning 500 teachers, 58% of teachers believe that smart phones and computers are the reason for children not being able to spell as well as former generations. (http://www. telegraph. co. uk/education/educationnews/8142721/Social-networking-teachers-blame-Facebook-and-Twitter-for-pupils-poor-grades. html) Also, on a different survey on that article, 73% of teachers recommend that parents limit the amount of time a child is online and spend more time doing homework. Therefore, most teachers believe that social media is ruining many children’s performances at school. Indeed, children are learning new words every day and in social media websites, words such as â€Å"tomorrow† is being spelt as â€Å"2morow† or â€Å"message† as â€Å"msg†. This causes confusion for children, as their vocabulary is being combined with â€Å"slang† terms. In summary, social media affects grades of children in negative terms and also impacts their human behavior. Secondly, social media impacts human behaviors of children. Without a doubt, social media is an environment where many children are influenced by many different people in numerous websites. In websites, such as Twitter and Facebook many users express themselves by posting pictures of drugs, alcohol and sex. A majority of their accounts are public to any Facebook user and this allows children to witness explicit photos and gain more knowledge about the â€Å"real† world. There is a major chance that they will also become alcoholics, drug and sex addicts when they are adults. Therefore, the more knowledge they receive about the â€Å"real† world, the more influenced they are. In April 2011, students from El Monte Union High School District in Los Angeles (predominantly under the age of 15) were surveyed about their frequent use of social media and their drug and alcohol use. Almost 30 percent of teenagers smoked and over half of them consumed alcohol at one point. Children that are under the age of 15 are being influenced by witnessing users on social media websites post inappropriate pictures. As a result, a majority of teenagers will also become alcoholics, drug and sex addicts due to influence from social media websites. They will have temptations to use swear words, drink alcohol, experiment with different types of drugs and have a desire for sexual behaviors as a result of what they are witnessing in that certain point of their lives. In this case, social media negatively influences children’s behaviors and as a result will lead to privacy issues. On the Internet, there are many child users but also many sexual predators that search for children on the Internet. Children under the age of 15, use social media to connect and communicate with friends. A majority of children also desire to meet people in the common age group, many of them would prefer the people they meet to be in the opposite gender. As a result, many sexual predators chose to create fake profiles to impersonate the lives of a young child in the common age groups of numerous amounts of children. In fact, sexual predators on the Internet manipulate children (mostly under the age of 15) to meet in person in an unsafe environment. In Southern California, a 21 year old male was arrested due to having sexual relations with two 13 year olds, one male and one female. He met up with the children in person after meeting them online at a social media website. There are pedophiles that can manipulate children, by posing as another child because of the fact that children under the age of 15 are gullible and still have to mature. Due to negative impacts on grades, effects on human behavior and lack of privacy, social media accounts are not for children 15 years of age or under. Over usage of social media websites will lead children to not do well in school. They will be influenced by anonymous strangers and also meet different types of people and a possibility of meeting sexual predators. Environmentalism .  Kiwis are environmentally concerned and have a strong desire to preserve their countrys beauty.   One of the major local issues is the importing of predators. .  Border controls are very tight and there are huge fines for importing food or other natural products such as wood, cane etc. .  The local attitu de towards the environment is largely influenced by the viewpoint of the indigenous population, the Maori. .  They believe that all things have a mauri a life force. .  Damage to this life force, or human attempts to dominate it, result in the mauri losing its energy and vitality, which affects the lives of people as well as the resilience of ecosystems.   Maintaining the mauri of the environment and ecosystem resilience are equally important for sustainable development. Egalitarianism .  The country has no formal class structure. .  Wealth and social status are not important to Kiwis. .  They take pride in individual achievements and believe that opportunities are available to all. .  As a welfare state unemployment benefits, housing and access to health is all available free of charge to those who cant afford it. .  Maori have a hierarchy especially apparent in formal situations.   For example, the elder (male or female) is seated in a specific area and will be asked to open or close a meeting. Mostly they are men but not always. Etiquette and Customs Meeting and Greeting .  Greetings are casual, often consisting simply of a handshake and a smile. .  Never underestimate the value of the smile as it indicates pleasure at meeting the other person. .  Although New Zealanders move to first names quickly, it is best to address them by their honorific title and surname until they suggest moving to a more familiar level or they call you by your first name. Maori meeting and greeting   Maori stand on ceremony and have distinct protocols regarding how visitors should be welcomed and seen off. .  If the business dealings are with a tribal group (Iwi) the welcoming protocols may be practiced through the process of Powhiri – a formal welcome that takes place on a Marae. .  A Powhiri can take between 30 minutes to 2-3 hours depending on the importance of the event. .  It begins by calling the visitors onto the area infront of the t raditional meeting house. Visitors should walk as a group and in silence expect if they have a responding caller to reply to the home peoples’ caller (usually an older woman).   A Powhiri dictates where people sit, in what position in their group, and who speaks. .  In most cases, but not all, you will notice the men are seated forward and only males speak. There is a tension between the men and women on this matter and in a few places this has been resolved and you will see both genders stand to speak. In the interests of not causing friction in your business dealings, always follow the lead of the home people. .  The welcoming speeches are given by the agreed speakers of the home people and always end with the most revered speaker or elder.   Speeches are given in the Maori language and each one accompanied by traditional song. You may not understand what is being said but you can rest assured it is likely to be from the best orators in the group and often very comp limentary. .  The visitors are expected to have at least one speaker reply on their behalf. .  If possible, the speaker should prepare a learned opening in Maori – it is critical that he/she focus on the pronunciation. Mispronounced words often result in whispers and sniggers and is considered disrespectful. It is better to have a very short opening said well, than a long one said badly.   The speaker’s reply should never be about the detailed purpose of the visit nor should it be to self-promote as this would be considered arrogant. .  The speaker should use the opportunity to briefly show respect to the place that they stand (ie. the location), to the houses (the traditional carved meeting house and dining room are named after ancestors and so are greeted accordingly), to greet the home people, and to explain where his/her group have come from (place is important to Maori). This should be followed by a song from the visitors’ country that the visitorsà ¢â‚¬â„¢ group should sing together.   The Powhiri can be daunting to visitors and can be fraught with traps that may offend. This is why most visitors seek the assistance of a Maori person to ‘guide’ them. .  Once the last elder of the home people has spoken, they will gesture the visitors to come forward in a line to shake hands, kiss (once) on the cheek or hongi (touch noses) with the home people. .  Following this the kitchen is ready to call people in to eat. .  Following the food, the meeting proper can begin. .  While this seems to be a set routine, I have been to many a Powhiri where variations of this occur. It pays to be vigilant and to follow the lead of others, or to discreetly ask questions if unsure. Gift Giving Etiquette .  If invited to a Kiwis house, bring a small gift such as flowers, chocolates, or a book about your home country to the hosts. .  Gifts should not be lavish. .  Gifts are opened when received. Dining Etiquette .  New Zealanders are casual as is reflected in their table manners. .  The more formal the occasion, the more strict the protocol. .  Wait to be told where to sit. .  Meals are often served family-style. .  Keep your elbows off the table and your hands above the table when eating.   Table manners are Continental hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right while eating. They will not look askance, however, if you adopt American table manners. .  Indicate you have finished eating by laying your knife and fork parallel on your plate with the handles facing to the right. Maori Dining Etiquette .  Following a Powhiri, the vis itors will be asked to the dining room (a separate building to the carved meeting house) to sit to eat at long tressle tables. .  They should not eat until the food has been ‘blessed’ or an acknowledgement said by an elder of the home people even if the food is getting cold.   Visitors should try to enable the home people to sit amongst them to chat and get to know them while eating. .  Often, younger people will be serving and older people will be working in the kitchen. .  It is important to realise that in most cases they are working voluntarily and it is appropriate to formally and publicly thank them near the close of the meal before leaving the dining room to begin the meeting. As a result of this, the visitors may be light-heartedly asked to sing. .  To sing a song from your home country would show respect and thanks. Business Etiquette Protocol Relationships Communication .  New Zealanders can be somewhat reserved, especially with people they do not know. .  Once they develop a personal relationship, they are friendly, outgoing and social. .  Do not appear too forward or overly friendly. .  They respect people who are honest, direct, and demonstrate a sense of humour. .  They trust people until they are given a reason not to. .  If this happens in business the breach will be difficult to repair and business dealings may cease or become more difficult. Business Meeting Etiquette   Appointments are usually necessary and should be made at least one week in advance by telephone, fax or email. .  It is generally easy to schedule meetings with senior level managers if you are coming from another country if the meeting is planned well in advance. .   It can be difficult to schedule meetings in December and January since these are the prime months for summer vacation. .  Arrive at m eetings on time or even a few minutes early. .  If you do not arrive on time, your behaviour may be interpreted as indicating that you are unreliable or that you think your time is more important than the person with whom you are meeting.   Meetings are generally relaxed; however, they are serious events. .  Expect a brief amount of small talk before getting down to the matter at hand. .  If you make a presentation, avoid hype, exaggerated claims, hyperbole, and bells and whistles. New Zealanders are interested in what people can do not what they say they can do. .  Present your business case with facts and figures. Emotions and feelings are not important in the New Zealand business climate. .  Maintain eye contact and a few feet of personal space. Despite the ethnic differences there are commonalities culturally speaking. Group Orientation The family is considered the centre of the social structure. As a result there is a great emphasis on unity, loyalty and respect for the elderly. The family is the place where the individual can be guaranteed both emotional and financial support. When one member of the family suffers a financial setback, the rest of the family will contribute what they can to help out. Families tend to be extended, although in the larger cities this will naturally differ. The Concept of Face Malays, Chinese and Indians all strive to maintain face and avoid shame both in public and private. Face is a personal concept that embraces qualities such as a good name, good character, and being held in esteem by ones peers. Face is considered a commodity that can be given, lost, taken away, or earned. On top of this face also extends to the family, school, company, and even the nation itself. The desire to maintain face makes Malaysians strive for harmonious relationships. Face can be lost by openly criticizing, insulting, or putting someone on the spot; doing something that brings shame to the group; challenging someone in authority, especially if this is done in public; showing anger at another person; refusing a request; not keeping a promise; or disagreeing with someone publicly. Conversely, face can be saved by remaining calm and courteous; discussing errors or transgressions in private; speaking about problems without blaming anyone; using non-verbal communication to say no; and allowing the other person to get out of the situation with their pride intact. Etiquette and Customs in Malaysia Meeting and Greeting Greetings in a social context will depend upon the ethnicity of the person you are meeting. In general, most Malays are aware of Western ways so the handshake is normal. There may be slight differences though and a few things to bear in mind include:   Malay women may not shake hands with men. Women can of course shake hands with women. Men may also not shake hands with women and may bow instead while placing their hand on their heart.   The Chinese handshake is light and may be rather prolonged. Men and women may shake hands, although the woman must extend her hand first. Many older Chinese lower their eyes during the greeting as a sign of respect.   Indians shake hands with members of the same sex. When being introduced to someone of the opposite sex, nodding the head and smiling is usually sufficient. Names The way names are used also varies between ethnicities: Chinese   The Chinese traditionally have 3 names. The surname (family name) is first and is followed by two personal names.   Many Chinese adopt more Western names and may ask you to use that instead. Malays   Many Malays do not have surnames. Instead, men add their fathers name to their own name with the term bin (meaning ‘son of’). So Rosli bin Suleiman, would be Rosli the son of Suleiman.   Women use the term binti, so Aysha bint Suleiman is Aysha the daughter of Suleiman. Indian   Many Indians do not use surnames. Instead, they place the initial of their fathers name in front of their own name. The mans formal name is their name s/o (son of) and the fathers name.   Women use d/o to refer to themselves as the daughter of their father. Gift Giving Etiquette Here are some general gift giving etiquette guidelines: Gift giving to Malays:   If invited to someones home for dinner, bring the hostess pastries or good quality chocolates.   Never give alcohol.   Do not give toy dogs or pigs to children.   Do not give anything made of pigskin.   Avoid white wrapping paper as it symbolizes death and mourning.   Avoid yellow wrapping paper, as it is the color of royalty.   If y ou give food, it must be â€Å"halal† (meaning permissible for Muslims).   Offer gifts with the right hand only or both hands if the item is large.   Gifts are generally not opened when received. Gift giving to Chinese:   If invited to someones home, bring a small gift of fruit, sweets, or cakes, saying that it is for the children.   A gift is traditionally refused before it is accepted to demonstrate that the recipient is not greedy.   Do not give scissors, knives or other cutting utensils as they indicate a desire to sever the relationship.   Flowers do not make good gifts as they are given to the sick and are used at funerals.   Do not wrap gifts in mourning colours white, blue, or black.   Wrap the gifts in happy colours red, pink, or yellow.   Elaborate gift wrapping is imperative.   Never wrap a gift for a baby or decorate the gift in any way with a stork, as birds are the harbinger of death.   It is best to give gifts in even numbers since odd numbers are unlucky.   Gifts are generally not opened when received. Gift giving to Indians:   If you give flowers, avoid frangipani as they are used in funeral wreaths.   Money should be given in odd numbers.   Offer gifts with the right hand only or both hands if the item is large.   Do not wrap gifts in white or black.   Wrap gifts in red, yellow or green paper or other bright colors as these bring good fortune.   Do not give leather products to a Hindu.   Do not give alcohol unless you are certain the recipient drinks.   Gifts are generally not opened when received. Business Card Etiquette   Business cards are exchanged after the initial introductions.   If you will be meeting Chinese, have one side of your card translated into Chinese, with the Chinese characters printed in gold.   If you will be meeting government officials, have one side of your card translated into Bahasa Malaysia.   Use two hands or the right hand only to exchange business cards.   Examine any business card you receive before putting it in your business card case.   The respect you show someones business card is indicative of the respect you will show the individual in business. Act accordingly.   Never write on someones card in their presence. Communication As an extension to the need to maintain harmonious relations, Malaysians rely on non-verbal communication (i. e. facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, etc). Such a communication style tends to be su btle, indirect and. Malays may hint at a point rather than making a direct statement, since that might cause the other person to lose face. Rather than say no, they might say, I will try, or I’ll see what I can do. This allows the person making the request and the person turning it down to save face and maintain harmony in their relationship. If you are unsure about the affirmative response you received, you may want to continue the discussion, re-phrasing the question in several different ways so that you may compare responses. If the response was given because the Malaysian did not know how to respond in the negative without causing offense, this may come out. Alternatively, they may have someone else give you the bad news. Silence is an important element of Malaysian communication. Pausing before responding to a question indicates that they have given the question appropriate thought and considered their response carefully. Many Malaysians do not understand the Western propensity to respond to a question hastily and can consider such behaviour thoughtless and rude. Malaysians may laugh at what may appear to outsiders as inappropriate moments. This device is used to conceal uneasiness. Do not show anger in public as it makes Malaysians uncomfortable and creates a feeling of powerlessness. There is a greater chance of achieving a good outcome id you are calm, whereas little is resolved by shouting. Business Meetings   It is a good idea for the most senior person on your team to enter first so that he or she is the first to greet the most senior Malaysian.   This gives face to both parties as it demonstrates respect towards the Malaysian and shows that you respect hierarchy within your company.   It is customary for leaders to sit opposite each other around the table.   Many companies will have their team seated in descending rank, although this is not always the case.   Expect the most senior Malaysian to give a brief welcoming speech. You need not reciprocate.   There will be a period of small talk, which will end when the most senior Malaysian is comfortable moving to the business discussion.   Meetings may be conducted or continue over lunch and dinner.   Meetings, especially initial ones, are generally somewhat formal. Bushido, The Samurai Code

Bushido, The Samurai Code Bushido was the code of conduct for Japans warrior classes from perhaps as early as the 8th century through modern times. The word bushido comes from the Japanese roots bushi  meaning warrior, and do meaning path or way. Literally, then, it can be translated as the way of the warrior.   Bushido was followed by Japans samurai warriors and their precursors in feudal Japan, as well as much of central  and east Asia. The principles of bushido emphasized honor, courage, skill in the martial arts, and loyalty to a warriors master (daimyo) above all else. It is somewhat similar to the ideas of chivalry that knights followed in feudal Europe. There is just as much folklore that exemplifies bushido- such as the 47  Ronin  of Japanese legend- as there is European folklore about knights.   What is Bushido? A more elaborated list of the virtues encoded in bushido includes frugality, righteousness, courage, benevolence, respect, sincerity, honor, loyalty, and self-control. The specific strictures of bushido varied, however, over time and from place to place within Japan.   Bushido was an ethical system, rather than a religious belief system. In fact, many samurais believed that they were excluded from any reward in the afterlife or in their next lives, according to the rules of Buddhism, because they were trained to fight and kill in this life. Nevertheless, their honor and loyalty had to sustain them, in the face of the knowledge that they would likely end up in the Buddhist version of hell after they died. The ideal samurai warrior was supposed to be immune from the fear of death. Only the fear of dishonor and loyalty to his daimyo motivated the true samurai.  If a samurai felt that he had lost his honor (or was about to lose it) according to the rules of bushido, he could regain his standing by committing a rather painful form of ritual suicide, called seppuku. A samurai who committed seppuku would not only regain his honor, he would actually gain prestige for his courage in facing death calmly. This became a cultural touchstone in Japan, so much so that women and children of the samurai class were also expected to face death calmly if they were caught up in a battle or siege. They also created the ideal of the warrior-poet, who was brave, well-educated, and loyal. In the middle period between the 13th to 16th centuries, Japanese literature celebrated reckless courage, extreme devotion to ones family and to ones lord, and cultivation of the intellect for warriors. Most of the works that dealt with what would later be called bushido concerned the great civil war known as the Genpei War  from 1180 to 1185, which pitted the Minamoto and Taira clans against one another and led to the foundation of the Kamakura Period of shogunate rule. The final phase of the development of bushido was the Tokugawa era, from 1600 to 1868. This was a time of introspection and theoretical development for the samurai warrior class because the country had been basically peaceful for centuries. The samurai practiced martial arts and studied the great war literature of earlier periods, but they had little opportunity to put the theory into practice until the Boshin War  of 1868 to 1869 and the later  Meiji Restoration. As with earlier periods, Tokugawa samurai looked to a previous, bloodier era in Japanese history for inspiration- in this case, more than a century of constant warfare among the daimyo clans. Modern Bushido After the samurai ruling class was abolished in the wake of the Meiji Restoration, Japan created a modern conscript army. One might think that bushido would fade away along with the samurai who had invented it. In fact, Japanese nationalists and war leaders continued to appeal to this cultural ideal throughout the early 20th century and World War II. Echoes of seppuku were strong in the suicide charges that Japanese troops made on various Pacific Islands, as well as in the kamikaze pilots who drove their aircraft into Allied battleships and bombed Hawaii to start off Americas involvement in the war. Today, bushido continues to resonate in modern Japanese culture.  Its stress on courage, self-denial, and loyalty has proved particularly useful for corporations seeking to get the maximum amount of work out of their salarymen.
